Check Please: The Cost of a Culinary Education

You’ve finally decided you want to pursue a culinary education but are concerned about the cost. So, what are your options?

Like most college programs, the cost of culinary school varies depending on the school, the curriculum and the type of degree. Typically the cost of culinary school ranges from around $15,000 to $30,000 a year. Of course, that doesn’t include the cost of kitchen fees, equipment, utensils, books and living expenses.

However, like most universities, culinary schools typically offer a variety of financial aid programs to help fund the cost of a culinary education. So, as you consider which culinary school you want to attend, find out what financial aid options they have to offer.

Loans, Grants and Scholarships

Student loans may help defer the cost of a culinary education. Some loans, such as those funded through Sallie Mae Financial, may cover as much as 100 percent of expenses. In addition, some culinary schools are approved by the U.S. government for Stafford Loans, Federal PLUS Loans, and Pell Grants.

Low interest loans and government grants are generally awarded on need. To find out if you qualify visit the Free Application for Student Aid at fafsa.ed.gov.

In addition to loans and grants, scholarships are also a culinary school funding option. There are a variety of scholarship programs available that are generally awarded based on need and goals. Web sites like reluctantgourmet.com are also a good resource for finding such scholarships. Here you will find scholarship and grant programs from places such as The American Culinary Federation and the American Institute of Wine and Food. The James Beard Foundation, which awarded a total of 80 culinary scholarships worth $265,000 in 2008, is also a good resource.

Alternative Funding Options

Also research alternative funding when it comes to funding the cost of your culinary education, consider vocational rehabilitation or Veteran’s programs, assistance from your family as well as full- or part-time employment.

Your culinary institute’s financial aid office can also answer questions, help you with financial aid applications as well as help you determine which financial aid program is right for you.

Our Stinkin’ Rose soiree beats the heck out of a Pig Fest
Recently perusing the new books section at the Gilroy library, I saw a book I knew I had to read, Garlic Capital of the World: Gilroy, Garlic and the Making of a Festive Foodscape. Written by a culinary anthropologist – who knew there was such a thing? – the book is quite academic and is in fact the product of press affiliated with the University of Mississippi. The author, Pauline Adema …

I need help with an essay title?

I’ve been working on an essay for a scholarship for the past week. I’m finally finished, but now I need a title and I can’t think of one. The essay is about James Beard, and his use of fresh, local ingredients, as well as his cultivation of American cuisine. I want the the title to stand out, but I don’t want it to be too ridiculous. I appreciate any help. Thanks!
